French is taught at The Mall from Year 2 onwards starting with two periods a week for Years 2 and 3. This increases to four periods in Years 4 and 5 and then five periods for the rest of the school. There are two full time French teachers.
The Mall French curriculum broadly follows the National Curriculum (though two years early) but is adjusted to the more rigorous demands of Common Entrance and Scholarship exams.
- To provide an enjoyable and stimulating language learning experience for students of all levels of ability.
- To develop the ability to use French effectively for purposes of practical communication both within and outside the classroom.
- To establish the skills, language and attitudes required to promote and facilitate further French learning.
- To develop a knowledge and understanding of and positive attitude towards French speakers throughout the world.
French is taught in a friendly and engaging manner which has resulted in it being a very popular subject at The Mall and with high standards of achievement. The French course for boys includes residential trips to France in Years 5 and again Year 7 where they have an opportunity to put their language skills into practice.
