At The Mall School, learning is not confined to the classroom. A carefully planned programme of trips and residential stays gives pupils the chance to explore, discover, and grow in ways that traditional lessons alone cannot provide. These experiences are a vital part of school life, enriching the curriculum while helping children develop confidence, independence, and a broader understanding of the world.
From the earliest years, pupils are introduced to educational visits that bring their learning to life. Reception pupils enjoy a summer term trip to Bocketts Farm, Year 1 have recently returned from Windsor Castle and Year 2 have learnt more about the Vikings at Chertsey Museum. As they move through the school, these opportunities expand into more ambitious day trips and residential stays, both within the UK and abroad.
Residential trips, in particular, are a highlight of the school journey. Whether it’s an outdoor adventure closer to home or an international experience, each trip is designed to challenge and inspire pupils in a supportive environment. Activities may include outdoor pursuits, cultural exploration, and language immersion — all tailored to suit the age and development of the children.
Senior pupils are offered the chance to learn, practice and refine their skiing on our annual trip to the Northern Alps in France. And for their residential trips, they explore the Isle of Wight, Dorset activity camps and Pas de Calais on the French coast.
These experiences allow pupils to step outside their comfort zones, try new activities, and engage with the world in a hands-on, meaningful way.
Trips and residential stays offer far-reaching benefits that support both personal and academic development.
Building confidence and independence
Spending time away from home helps children develop independence and self-reliance. From managing their belongings to navigating new environments, pupils gain a sense of responsibility and achievement.
Developing social skills
Shared experiences strengthen friendships and encourage teamwork. Pupils learn to collaborate, support one another, and build positive relationships outside the usual classroom setting.
Encouraging resilience
Trying new activities — whether physical challenges or communicating in a different language — helps children develop resilience. They learn that it’s okay to make mistakes and that perseverance leads to success.
Enhancing learning
Experiential learning makes lessons more memorable. Whether exploring nature, engaging with history, or practising language skills in real-life situations, pupils gain a deeper understanding of what they have learned in school.
Broadening perspectives
Travel, especially abroad, introduces children to new cultures, traditions, and ways of life. This fosters curiosity, empathy, and a more global outlook from an early age.
One of the key benefits of choosing The Mall School is the breadth and quality of opportunities available beyond the classroom.
We have the flexibility to design a rich and varied programme of trips that are closely linked to the curriculum. Our smaller class sizes mean pupils receive more personalised support during these experiences, ensuring every child is encouraged to participate and succeed.
We also emphasise holistic education — developing the whole child, not just academically but socially and emotionally. Trips and residential stays are a central part of this approach, helping pupils build character, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.
Lasting impact
The memories created on school trips often stay with children for years to come. Whether it’s the excitement of their first residential, the pride of mastering a new skill, or the joy of shared experiences with friends, these moments play a significant role in shaping young people.
At The Mall School, trips and residential stays are more than just excursions — they are opportunities for growth, discovery, and inspiration. They help prepare pupils not only for the next stage of their education, but for life beyond school, equipping them with the confidence and curiosity to embrace the world around them.
