Music is a powerful, unique form of communication that can change the way pupils feel, think and act. It brings together intellect and feeling and enables personal expression, reflection and emotional development. As an integral part of culture, past and present, it helps pupils understand themselves and relate to others, forging important links between the home, school and the wider world.
The teaching of music develops pupils’ ability to listen and appreciate a wide variety of music and to make judgments about musical quality. It encourages active involvement in different forms of amateur music making, both individual and communal, developing a sense of group identity and togetherness. It also increases self-discipline and creativity, aesthetic sensitivity and fulfilment.
From Year 2, pupils can start learning to play an instrument, beginning with the recorder. We offer lessons with music teachers specialising in specific instruments to ensure our pupils are given the best possible teaching.
Parents are invited to regular concerts and to a fabulous prom in the summer, where pupils in Year 3 to 6 perform recorder music, the rock band and even in our string orchestra. There are many opportunities for pupils to flourish within music at The Mall.
From the moment your child joins the school, they will take part in a range of creative art activities. In Reception to Year 3, they are taught art in their classroom and then, from Years 4 to 6, they are taught in a purpose-built, spacious studio where they learn to use a wide range of materials confidently and competently, including firing their own clay in our kiln.
In the summer term, we also host an Art Fair: children create bespoke artwork for it and parents can donate to support our partner school in Malawi, Chitsime.
From Year 4, children are also taught design technology and are able to use a laser cutter, milling machine and 3D printer.
In Year 3 to 5, pupils take part in our annual Musicals at The Mall show. Each year group performs a number of songs from a different musical to family and friends.
In Year 6, pupils perform an end of year show to both the school and parents. Recent shows include The Wizard of Oz and Oliver with a Twist. Pupils can also take the LAMDA exam.
